Company Launches New Campaign: "Green Lives Here"
April 13, 2009 - NBC Universal kicks off its second annual Earth Week on April 19th, as part of the company's ongoing environmental initiative, "Green is Universal." Beginning with the MISS USA pageant in primetime on April 19th, more than 40 different NBCU brands will produce over 100 hours of green-themed content for this event.
Additionally, the company launches "Green Lives Here," a new tagline that will be adapted across all NBCU platforms to fit each brand identity. For example, NBC News will use "Green Matters Here," "Access Hollywood" will promote "Green Stars Here" and CNBC's tagline will be "Green Invests Here." Every property, from MSNBC to NBC Nightly News to Oxygen to USA Network to Telemundo to NBC.com, will turn its on-air graphic and marketing packages green for the entire week using the new brand platform.

Following are some highlights of the green-themed programming and events scheduled for the week of April 19th:
NBC Primetime- "Miss USA" kicks off Earth Week on Sunday, April 19th, hosted by Billy Bush ("Access Hollywood") and Nadine Velazquez ("My name is Earl"). Contestants will share 'go green' testimonials and will compete for a crown made with eco-friendly precious gemstones.
NBC News- MSNBC airs "Journey to the End of the World," the first film in a four-part "Future Earth" series that will run throughout 2009. The film follows the Tara Expedition - a small band of scientists who travel to the top of the world on a high-tech sailboat to find out how and why the Arctic is melting. "Nightly News with Brian Williams" will feature a special report by NBC News' Chief Environmental Correspondent, Anne Thompson, called "Sea Change." The segment will focus on the state of the Oceans, leading up to the UN's conference on oceans in May. "TODAY " will air a variety of green-themed segments including "Recycling Made Simple," "Going Green, Yet Saving Cash," and "Who Knew? Earth Day Trivia." On "Meet The Press," host David Gregory will discuss environmental topics, with a special focus on the White House and the Obama administration's positions on green.
CNBC will air green episodes of "Fast Money," "Mad Money," "The Suze Orman Show" and "On The Money," as well as "The Carbon Challenge," a series that explores and analyzes the rush by countries, corporations and individuals to shrink their carbon footprint.
Cable Entertainment- On April 21st, Oxygen will air a green-themed episode of its newest reality competition series, "Pretty Wicked," where contestants receive eco-friendly makeovers. The network will also run eco-themed vignettes from "Tori and Dean" and "America's Next Top Model Obsessed" throughout the week. Bravo will run green-themed encores of "Project Runway", "Shear Genius," "Top Design," and "The Real Housewives of the OC." SCI FI will re-air green episodes of "Eureka" and "Stargate Atlantis," as well as a block of "Earth in Peril" movies. USA Network will air Character Of The Month "Green Rockers" vignettes, focusing on environmentally-conscious musicians.
The Weather Channel will broadcast reports covering everything from alternative energy and organic food to green building and sustainable lifestyles. Weather.com will highlight how to green different aspects of life, and will make green tips available on mobile devices. In addition, winners will be announced online for the Earth Day 2009 "Care-and-Share" contest, a campaign where students and families were invited to share how they plan to celebrate or observe Earth Day.
Telemundo will participate in the first ever nationally televised Spanish language town hall on the new green economy, with Telemundo anchor Vanessa Hauc serving as the moderator. The historic event will bring together prominent Hispanic leaders, business leaders and academics, to inform the Hispanic community on how government policies and business will come together to help solve the climate crisis and boost South Florida's economy by creating much-needed jobs. Telemundo will also air "Alerta Verde" PSAs featuring Maria Celeste.
Mun2 - Host Pico will incorporate green tips into the weekly show "Mun2 Shuffle." The channel will also turn its homepage green all week, with five daily green tips and green-themed news stories.
The NBC Local Media Group, which includes NBC's ten owned-and-operated stations, will air green local news and lifestyle segments throughout the week. LX.TV programs "First Look" and "Open House NYC" both go green, as "Open House NYC" host George Oliphant teams up with GreenIQ.com to green a NYC apartment. On "First Look," Sara Gore and George Oliphant report on eco-friendly dry cleaning, a Greasecar system powered by vegetable oil, local sustainable farms, and green boutiques in Chicago. NY NONSTOP, WNBC's newly launched 24-hour digital news channel, will also integrate green stories throughout the week.
iCue.com, a fun, innovative learning site built around video from the NBC News archives, adds an environmental science collection, beginning this Earth Week. Over 200 videos on topics ranging from climate change to carbon footprints to alternative energy and the history of Earth Day will be featured on the interactive website.
iVillage will feature tips, tools and articles on simple steps to cut consumption as well as strategies from the community for using less, tossing out less, and spending less as users go green. Petside.com, the popular online destination for pet owners and pet enthusiasts from NBC Digital Networks, celebrates Earth Day by releasing its exclusive list of the "Top 10 Eco-Friendly Pet Toys."
NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution - "Access Hollywood's" Maria Menounos will spend the entire week putting the spotlight on eco-friendly initiatives in the film and TV industry. Fellow syndicated TV series "Deal or No Deal," "Maury," "The Jerry Springer Show" and "The Steve Wilkos Show" will be featuring Earth Week graphics and endpages, as well as green tips on each show's websites throughout the week.
Universal Studios Hollywood celebrates Earth Day with a free "Eco-Fair" on April 19th. Guests will have the opportunity to take rides on electric bicycles, discover how an engine-less SUV can zoom to astonishing speeds, see just how quickly cookies bake in a solar powered oven and get creative ideas to help us green their lives.
Universal Orlando Resort celebrates Earth Week by introducing a new line of eco-friendly merchandise including aluminum travel canisters, coffee mugs, water bottles, recycled notebooks and more. Employees will also volunteer at a City of Orlando Earth Day event, with tree planting and educational opportunities for local residents that will include tree give-aways. In addition, Universal Orlando Resort will sponsor a green-themed "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" focused on energy conservation.
Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPIE) has launched a number of children's DVD releases using eco-friendly packaging in France. The company has also introduced a one minute "One Day, One Act" program at the beginning of all new DVD releases, providing simple and clear ecological messages for children and parents. In Brazil and Sweden, UPIE launched eco-friendly releases of "Barbie Thumbelina," and has partnered with schools to engage children in ways they can help the environment.
KidsCo, the international children's channel owned by leading media companies NBC Universal, Cookie Jar Group and Corus Entertainment Inc., will launch a green animation series, "Boo and Me" that will air throughout Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Asia.
NBCU Volunteers will host several Earth Week service projects, such as tree plantings, in more than ten cities including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington D.C., Chicago and London. In addition, many NBCU locations, including New York, New Jersey, and London, will hold "Green Recycles Here" events. NBCU employees will donate gently used clothing to Dress for Success, Career Gear and Salvation Army. Books collected at the event will be donated to HousingWorks, and CDs/DVDs and batteries gathered will be recycled.
The NBC Universal Foundation has partnered with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) to fund a "Green Your School" contest. The contest urges students in all U.S. high schools to submit their school's best green-related projects for the chance to win a $5,000 grand prize.
