The Weather Channel Provides Best Weather Coverage Across Platforms During Recent Midwest Blizzard

(December 16, 2010) - During last weekend's severe winter weather that impacted the majority of the Midwest from Michigan to South Dakota, The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) saw huge numbers and was the No. 1 choice for blizzard coverage across platforms.  According to a recent poll conducted by SurveyUSA, respondents favored TWCC for having the best coverage of the Midwest Blizzard on each platform - TV, online and mobile.*

TWCC continues to be the most reliable and trusted name in weather, as evidenced by strong consumer numbers. For example, TWC tied for the No. 1 cable news network on Dec. 12 and digital properties saw more than 100 percent increase in total page views over an average weekend. According to consumers, The Weather Channel also ranked the highest for best television coverage, best website coverage and best mobile coverage. Highlights include:

  • According to SurveyUSA, the largest percentage of respondents (22%) chose The Weather Channel as having the best TV coverage of the storm; when asked who provided the best Internet coverage of the storm, they chose weather.com (24%); and when asked who provided the best mobile coverage of the storm, they chose weather.com on mobile Web (42%).*
  • weather.com saw 98.6 million total page views on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 11-12, while TWC mobile (mobile web and apps) received 91.6 million page views.
  • Consumers responded to streaming video available on weather.com. The site saw 3.3 million video streams on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday proved to be TWC's fifth highest video day of the year.
  • More than 40 million people over the age of 2 watched TWC's coverage of the December 11-12 Midwest weekend blizzard. This was more people than tuned in to each of the cable news networks. This included 17 million people in the 25-54 range**
  • TWC saw its highest daily Total Day (3 a.m.-3 a.m.) delivery figures for the month of December to date among households and people aged 25-54, tying TWC with MSNBC as No. 1 among all cable news networks on Sunday, Dec. 12, among people 25-54.**
  • TWC ranked No. 1 among people 25-54 on Sunday morning (7 a.m.-11 a.m.), Dec. 12.**
