From the producers of “Hatfields & McCoys,” The Weather Channel revisits the harrowing tale of the Donner Party and their pursuit of the American Dream with the 2-hour historical documentary, “Dead of Winter: The Donner Party.”
For the Donner Party, what starts out as a simple voyage to the West quickly turns deadly after a series of bad decisions and severe weather. Trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this group of nearly 80 settlers fall prey to sub-zero temperatures, torrential rainfalls, extreme heat, and ten-foot snow drifts, which eventually forces them to turn on each other in order to survive. It’s the classic tale of man vs. nature… what would you do to save your family?
“The Donner Party” explores this exciting journey through a hybrid of first-person narration by Emmy Award-winning actor Powers Boothe, remarkable reenactments, expert interviews, CGI, and archival materials.
“The Donner Party” has been selected to screen at the Savannah Film Festival on Wednesday, October 28. The special premiered at the Boston Film Festival as the closing night selection.
The documentary is produced by Thinkfactory Media ("Hatfields & McCoys," "Texas Rising," "Marriage Boot Camp"), a full-service production company that creates award-winning, high-quality entertainment content. Adam Reed, Adam Freeman, Leslie Greif, Raymond Bridgers, and John Joseph serve as executive producers.
“Dead of Winter: The Donner Party” premieres Friday, November 27 at 9 p.m. ET on The Weather Channel.
